Motorcycle safety and your personal injury case
As a personal injury attorney, the worst kinds of injuries that I generally see often result from motorcycle accidents. A motorcycle does not offer any significant protection against a passenger car, pick-up truck, or larger truck. These motorcycle accident injuries usually manifest themselves immediately, sometimes with multiple broken bones requiring multiple surgeries to repair, or even death.

Deadly accidents more likely for motorcycle riders
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides that motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than those in passenger cars. Although the NTSA’s statistics are from 2006, they provide that there were 88,000 motorcyclists injured in highway accidents alone and 4,810 motorcyclist deaths in road accidents. Further, a 2009 Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data report states that 42% of two vehicle fatal motorcycle crashes involved another vehicle making a left hand turn.
Motorcycle accident injuries are often caused by car drivers who can’t see them
Clearly, the lack of visibility of a motorcycle compared to another larger vehicle contributes to these accidents. The motorcycle has a much smaller silhouette. Unfortunately, the drivers of passenger cars and trucks oftentimes are not actively looking for motorcycles on the roadway. A motorcyclist may be an excellent driver, but it is the other driver that will likely cause an unavoidable motorcycle accident.
Motorcycles should use headlamps to avoid accident injuries
To counter this lack of visibility, a motorcyclist should have his headlamps turned on and wear a high visibility yellow, orange, or bright red jacket. If you are a motorcyclist and feel that this will cramp your style (maybe you like wearing a black biker’s jacket), this proactive change may save your life.
