If you grew up in New Orleans, chances are you’ve been down the Dragon Slide. For decades, the iconic green dragon at Storyland has been a favorite among local families, welcoming generations of children to climb to the top and race down the slide. That’s why so many people were disappointed when the original Dragon Slide was removed last year after years of use.
Now, thanks to the support of Cathy and Morris Bart, the Dragon Slide is back.
On June 25, City Park Conservancy will celebrate the return of the beloved attraction with a community event at Storyland, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of New Orleans’ most cherished childhood landmarks.
A Beloved New Orleans Tradition
Since opening in the 1950s, Storyland has been a place where generations of New Orleans families have made lasting memories.
Among its most beloved attractions was the Dragon Slide, which became a fixture of childhood for generations of New Orleanians. Originally donated by Cathy and Morris Bart, the slide quickly became a fixture of Storyland. When the slide was eventually removed, many locals were saddened to see a beloved piece of New Orleans childhood disappear.
The installation of the new Dragon Slide ensures that future generations will have the opportunity to create those same memories.
Bringing Back a Local Favorite
Having donated the original Dragon slide, Cathy and Morris Bart were thrilled to donate the new slide. For the Barts, supporting the project was an opportunity to help preserve a special piece of New Orleans childhood.
As Morris Bart explained, “Storyland has such a special place in my heart and in the hearts of lots of New Orleanians, and I’m thrilled to partner with City Park Conservancy to bring home a new and improved Dragon Slide for everyone in our community to enjoy. I’m certain that the community will be just as excited for the next generations to have the same experiences that have shaped the slide into a beloved local landmark.”
While the new Dragon Slide maintains the familiar look that generations of New Orleanians remember, it has been redesigned with updated safety features to serve families for years to come.
Join the Celebration
Families are invited to attend the celebration on June 25, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Storyland.
The morning will begin with a special Storyland Story Time featuring Puff the Magic Dragon. Following Story Time, families will be invited to explore Storyland during Community Play Time and experience the all-new Dragon Slide.
Guests can also enjoy complimentary snowballs, including a special creation featuring Morris Bart’s Louisiana Hot Sauce.
The celebration will conclude at 12:15 p.m. when Cathy and Morris Bart join families and community members for the ceremonial first ride down the Dragon Slide. The event marks not only the return of a beloved playground attraction, but also the continuation of a New Orleans tradition that has brought joy to local families for generations.
