Trees are much sturdier than they look. Crashing into one is a good way to total your vehicle, at the very least. Sometimes a tree crash can kill, like in this case from Tangipahoa Parish. Fox 8 reports on the fatal crash.
Two people died in a car fire after their car struck a tree according to the Louisiana State Police. The crash happened on Saturday. For reasons unknown, a Dodge Dakota went off the road on LA 442 just over the Parish line and hit the tree.
The impact caused the car to burst into flames. By the time the officers arrived, both the driver and the passenger were dead. It is unknown if the deceased were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Police were able to obtain blood samples to see if the driver was intoxicated prior to the crash. Those results are pending.
One reason trees hit harder is because they have a smaller impact area. This can drive them through the engine and cause fires like this. Utility poles and concrete pillars can have the same effect. Most car crashes are between other cars, so safety features are designed for that sort of impact.
