CBS 42 News reports that an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer overturned on a stretch of Interstate 20 known as Dead Man’s Curve near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Thursday afternoon.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, but the stretch of I-20 where the incident happened is infamous for wrecks, especially involving tractor-trailers. Just two weeks ago on a Friday around 8:00 p.m., another incident occurred that led to two injuries when an 18-wheeler tipped all the way off the interstate, landing on 3rd Avenue North. Both occupants of the truck were able to make their way out of the vehicle but were hospitalized with injuries.

WBRC 6 News reported on this dangerous stretch of interstate as early as 2017, stating that dozens have been killed over the years. A representative of the Birmingham Police Department stated at least one or two semis overturn on the stretch of highway, one of the busiest routes into the city, each month. Congestion leads to cars not giving these semi-trucks enough room to brake going into the curve, and speeding is rampant in the area. They reported that data from 2017 shows out of 34 traffic fatalities in Birmingham, 14 were on this stretch of interstate highway.
