Americans do love to watch racing, but participating in street races can lead to fatal accidents. That’s what happened near Shreveport last weekend.
The Louisiana State Police and Arklatexhomepage.com reported that there were several late-night racing events happening on Sunday. At one stop, troopers said a teen driver and five others in a car ran away from police, leading to a chase on multiple streets.
That car failed to negotiate a curve on LA Highway 511 near Meriwether Road. It lost control and struck a tree, killing the driver at the scene. The other five passengers were taken to the hospital. It is unclear if any of them were restrained.
There was no information in the report about the other street racing locations.

Racing is thrilling, but public roads are not designed for races like these. Professional drivers go through years of training to be able to race on street circuits, and even then accidents happen that can kill. Seek out a race track and get training if you want to race. Don’t put yourself and others at risk.
Also, this accident is a good reminder to wear your seatbelt. You can cut your chances of a fatal accident in half by wearing one. Don’t leave yours off!
