The officer took a toxicology test to screen for alcohol and narcotics following the crash and did not appear to be impaired, according to a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department. However, the officer has been placed on desk duty pending the results of a full investigation into the tragic accident. Normally, the officer is assigned to the 6th district, an area of the city that includes Central City and the Irish Channel. He had been on the force since April 1996.
The officer is a member of the Black Fraternal Order of Police, and an attorney for that organization declined to comment on the case to NOLA.com. The NOPD investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can contact the agency.
