The Grenada Star reported Monday on an accident last Thursday involving three 18-wheelers in Carroll County near the Carroll/Grenada County line that claimed two lives and was described by motorists who saw the accident as “the worst accident they had ever seen.”
The accident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th when troopers with Troop D of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol responded to the accident near mile marker 195 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55, south of the town of Grenada and north of Winona. Three fully-loaded semi-trucks, all headed north, collided with each other. A 32-year-old Oxford man driving a 2018 Freightliner with double trailers left the roadway; he over-corrected and the whole rig turned over.
A 62-year-old Jackson man was driving a 2021 Freightliner that struck the overturned rig, causing his truck to catch fire. A 64-year-old Gulfport man in another truck was also killed in the wreck, although specifics weren’t provided. The three trucks were carrying alcoholic beverages, pineapples, and rubber gloves, respectively.

According to The Winona Times, first responders were on scene from the Carrollton/North Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Winona Fire Department, Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Elliott Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Management, Carroll County Emergency Management, Carroll County Sheriff Department, MedStar EMS, Mississippi Department of Transportation, and Mississippi Highway Patrol.
