Head-on crashes are fairly rare, but they’re often deadly. The force of two vehicles approaching at speed multiplies the impact. Drunk drivers, the elderly, and inexperienced drivers are the most common reasons for a head-on collision.
One such collision happened in Lafourche Parish last Friday according to WVUE. It happened on LA Highway 20 in Chackbay in the late evening. A Ford Explorer Sport drifted across the center line and collided with a pickup truck. The two drivers, one of whom was in their 70s, were killed at the scene.
A third vehicle also crashed into the accident. The six people in that vehicle received minor injuries. Police are unsure if either of the deceased men were drunk at the time of the crash, nor is speed assumed to be a cause of the incident.
Older drivers start to see their driving ability slip over time. Reaction speeds slow down and road markings may become confusing. The most worrisome issue is vision. Drivers over a certain age must receive regular vision tests to make sure they can drive safely.
If you have an older driver in your family, encourage them to get tested. Eventually, we will all have to stop driving due to age-related issues. The key is to know when it’s time to give the keys to someone else before a deadly accident.
