It doesn’t matter how old you are. If you drive recklessly, the police will arrest you and charge you. A 75-year-old woman is facing negligent homicide charges after her passenger died in a train crash in Kenner. Nola.com reports.
The driver turned herself in at the Kenner Police Department. The driver said she went around a lowered railroad crossing gate to beat a train and didn’t make it in time. Her passenger was killed in the crash. The Amtrack train struck the truck at just under 60 mph and tore the vehicle in two.
Even though the passenger was buckled in, the impact threw him thirty feet from the truck. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized for several months prior to turning herself in. She is currently out on bond while she awaits trial.
The bed of the truck flew 60 feet away from the impact site. That shows the power of a massive train. It doesn’t have to be going fast to create a lot of damage, and this train was going at a high speed. This unfortunate incident was the result of someone being too impatient to wait for a train.
It doesn’t matter if it makes you late or if you’re tired of waiting. If you’re caught by a train, the train goes first! You can’t beat physics.
