New Orleans has plenty of drainage canals to deal with flood waters, but these canals are dangerous if you fall in or drive into one. An elderly driver died after driving a truck into one of these canals near Kenner, according to NOLA.com.
Witnesses near the crash were able to enter the canal and pull out the driver before the truck was swept away. One of them started giving the 80-year-old driver CPR on the bank of the canal.
Despite this care and the arrival of paramedics, the man died at a hospital according to the police. The crash happened on Joe Yenni Boulevard near Alabama avenue. It is unknown why the driver swerved off the roadway and into the canal.
Given the age of the driver, this may have been due to a medical incident. While the chances are tiny, it is possible to have a medical emergency during driving that can cause a crash. However, this is just speculation. An autopsy will need to be done to find out the final cause of death.
Regardless of the reason, this case serves as a warning to be careful driving near drainage canals. If your vehicle falls in, you may not be able to get out in time before you drown.
