One of the first things that drivers learn when they get behind the wheel is what the pedals do. Mixing them up can lead to accidents. Unfortunately, as we get older we might accidentally hit the wrong pedal. That’s what appeared to happen in this accident, as reported by WWL-TV.
The Royal Blend Coffee & Tea shop received an unpleasant surprise when a 76-year-old driver crashed through the wall in early January. The driver hit the accelerator rather than the brake, according to the police.
The shop, located at Friedrichs Avenue and Metairie Road, was closed after the incident. An ambulance was called to the scene to take a patron of the shop to the hospital for a minor injury. The driver was cited for reckless driving.
As we age, our reaction times start to slow and we may start to forget how to do certain tasks. At some point, we will all lose the ability to drive safely on the road. If you are caring for an elderly loved one, watch out for signs that their driving ability is slipping. You may save their life and the lives of others.
It may be painful to take away their keys after a lifetime of driving, but keeping them off the road can be what is needed to ensure they have a long life.
