A man was convicted of drunk driving and killing a 15-year-old high school student in a crash in Birmingham. WVTM reported on the sentencing.
Bradford Meeks has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his crimes, which include criminally negligent homicide involving DUI, third-degree assault, and DUI. He received the maximum penalty for each charge and they will be served consecutively.
The crash happened in 2017 in Cullman County. In addition to killing the student, the victim’s mother was also injured in the head-on crash.
This criminal may lose a lot of his life, but the person he killed will never get to live out the rest of his. Drunk driving carries severe punishments for a reason. Your chances of getting into a wreck when you drive drunk are much higher than normal and when one does happen the consequences are worse. Head-on collisions and wrong-way crashes are often caused by drunk drivers.
If you drink alcohol or take drugs that can impair driving and judgment, don’t take the risk. Use a designated driver, call a ride share, or get a taxi to your destination. You can come back later and pick up your car when you are sober. You could be saving someone’s life.
