The Twin Span Bridge is crucial to the economy of Louisiana, but it is also a dangerous bridge. If you go off of it, you’ll end up in Lake Pontchartrain. The waters of the lake are often fatal for swimmers, as this crash demonstrates. NOLA.com reports.
A driver fell off of the bridge after a crash and died according to Louisiana State Police. The accident happened in the late evening on I-10 East. A car and a truck were on the shoulder of the road due to an earlier collision.
Another vehicle crashed into the back of the parked cars and pushed them into the pedestrians. One fell off the bridge and into the water. Police eventually found his body.
It’s best to stay at least 100 feet away from any crash scene in case something like this happens. That will give you enough space to move away from the accident in most cases. That distance will also protect you from the worst in the very rare occasion of a car explosion.
It’s also good to put on your hazards and lift the hood of your vehicle if you can. That’s a universal signal to drivers that something is wrong, though it’s not always possible depending on the crash. For extra safety, consider carrying road flares or safety triangles on your car with the spare to mark the roadway.
