When police discover that a crime is in process, they have to be quick to apprehend the suspect. However, this speed can cause dangerous crashes in the line of duty. Usually, these crashes are because the suspect panics and speeds off recklessly. A fatal crash of this type happened today on City Park Avenue because of a police chase. WWLTV reported on the incident.

The crash happened before morning rush hour in the 600 block of City Park Avenue between Toulouse and North Bernadette streets. Officers from Jefferson Parish said that a license plate reader flagged an SUV as a stolen vehicle about an hour before the accident. They attempted to pull over the driver, but the driver sped off.
That triggered a police chase. The driver of the SUV lost control, crossed the median, and crashed into a tree. The driver was killed at the scene. Two passengers were taken to the hospital. No information about their condition or their identities has been released to the public.
The New Orleans Police Department is investigating the crash, and the sheriff’s office is investigating the chase. So far, it’s been reported that the deputies were nowhere near the SUV when it lost control.
