Sibling rivalry is one thing, but drag racing them on the streets of New Orleans is another. The Advocate reported on a tragic crash that killed a brother and an innocent cyclist.
The two brothers were drag racing on North Lobdell Boulevard near Lobwood drive around 5:30 PM. One of the brothers lost control of his BMW 135I and struck the driver side of the other’s Mustang.
Both vehicles left the roadway, striking a cyclist, a utility pole, and a tree. The cyclist and the driver of the BMW died at the scene. The Mustang driver survived and was arrested for multiple charges, including DUI and vehicular homicide.
As exciting as movies show drag racing on public streets is, there’s a reason you only see it in movies. It’s an incredibly dangerous act. Even the police do not like to go on high-speed chases because of the danger to the public and to themselves.
If you must race, do so on a designated track. There are plenty of ways to get your fix for speed without endangering others like the innocent cyclist in this case. We hope that the family of the cyclist will be able to receive compensation.
