An accident near Huntsville has killed a woman. Quad Cities Daily reported on the incident.
The crash happened on Monday around 7:20 AM, according to the police. An elderly woman driving a Chevrolet Suburban was struck by a pickup truck on U.S. 72. The Suburban turned over and killed the woman. Another person in the truck was injured and taken to the hospital.
Police are investigating what happened. No information has been given about whether the driver will face any charges.
A Suburban is a large SUV, and like many SUVs they are vulnerable to tipping over. The heavier a vehicle is above the axles, the more likely it will tip. This is why trucks have to slow down around certain curves. Just the weight of the truck can cause it to tip over if it’s moving fast enough.
Rollover crashes are also dangerous because there aren’t a lot of safety features to protect drivers when they roll. It’s easy to knock your head hard against the door or the ceiling, and objects in the car can get flung about fast enough to hurt or kill.
All this to say that if you choose to own an SUV or a similar vehicle, take extra care on the road.
