Carjacking isn’t that common of a crime, but it’s quite scary when it happens. Seeing someone come up to your vehicle and try to take it over is no picnic. Fighting back can cause an accident. This is why some people decide to just give up their car.
That may have worked in this victim’s favor after a 16-year-old carjacked his vehicle. Fox 8 reports.
A teen was arrested in late December after he carjacked a vehicle at the intersection of Burgundy and Iberville Streets in New Orleans. Fortunately for the owner of the car, the carjacker didn’t get very far.
The carjacker wrecked the car soon after stealing it. He then left the car and fled on foot, but for reasons unknown he came back to the car and tried to run away again with it. Then he got into a second accident.
By this point, witnesses were able to apprehend the carjacker until the police arrived. The names of the victim and the carjacker have not been released.
Most carjackers do carry a weapon to intimidate drivers into giving up a vehicle. It is unknown if the teen was armed in this case, but it’s better not to presume. The advice given by law enforcement is to de-escalate the situation if you can and give up the vehicle so that you are not attacked. However, if you are kidnapped by the carjacker then you may be forced to do so.
