We are now one week away from the start of Carnival season and all of the craziness it brings, including increased traffic and a huge flood of tourists for the Mardi Gras celebrations. Tulane Health System offers some tips on how to stay safe during the celebration. MyNewOrleans.com reports.
According to the hospital, they see many preventable accidents and injuries during the holiday. The first tip they have is to call 911 if there is a life-threatening situation. EMS has ways of getting through the crowds that will get you to the hospital faster.
A lot of the tips they have are good common sense, like drinking water between drinking alcoholic drinks to help with hangovers and slow the level of drunkenness. Another danger is injuries while trying to get beads from the floats. Some people get into fights over beads and others get their hands stepped on when they bend down to get them.

Children at the parade need to take special precautions. Be careful not to let them get too close to the floats and watch what they might pick up. Beads break and could cause a choking hazard. Teach them how to find a police officer if they feel unsafe, and set up a meeting spot as well. You can also put their name and contact information on their arm.
