The Texarkana Gazette reported last Thursday on the aftermath of a SW Arkansas accident that tragically killed three members of a Sevier County family.
A 26-year-old man from Abilene, TX pleaded guilty to three counts of negligent homicide and a count of first-degree felony battery for the accident that took place on October 12, 2019. According to the Arkansas State Police, the man was driving north on Highway 41 near De Queen when he crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck a southbound SUV containing four members of a family from Horatio, AR. Both parents were killed as was one of their daughters, who was nine; a second daughter, seven years of age, was seriously injured.
The Abilene man admitted he was trying to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone when the accident occurred, and that he had had a few drinks. He was reportedly exhibiting multiple signs of intoxication. He had been in the process of moving to Gilliam, Arkansas at the time of the accident.
The trial was due to begin last week, but the suspect entered the guilty plea just before the trial began, according to the prosecutor’s office.
