Morris Bart, LLC is proud to announce that this year, two students will receive the Morris Bart, LLC Community Service Scholarship. For the first time since we established this national scholarship, two of the entrants were so strong that we decided to award each of them the $2,500 scholarship. Congratulations to Na’Lani Zeno and Brooke Butler.
Na’Lani, 21, is a senior at Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, LA, majoring in chemistry with plans to attend pharmacy school. She has received the President’s Scholarship, Monkhouse Mellor Scholarship, Louisiana TOPS Performance, and is a student researcher in the chemistry department.

Brooke Butler, 18, is a first-year student at Stockton University in Galloway, NJ, majoring in dance and pre-physical therapy. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National BETA Club, and the Key Club, which awarded her its Bronze Award.
She also is a member of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists and is an accomplished dancer. She was one of only 21 students to study at the Summer Dance Intensive at New York University in 2019.
Both women wrote movingly about their commitment to community service.
“I am a firm believer that service is the greatest act of kindness one human being can do for another,’’ Brooke wrote. The Baton Rouge, LA native volunteered, through her church, with a group called Devoted. Her parents, Robert and Chiquita Butler, were active members of their church and encouraged her to be of service. Through Devoted, Brooke went on a mission to El Paso, TX, a destination that initially disappointed her – she wanted to travel to Honduras.
“Who needed our help? What could I possibly do there? As it turns out, there was plenty to do,’’ she wrote.
Na’Lani, a Lafayette, LA resident, volunteered in too many places to enumerate here. She is the Assistant Student Director for The Big Event, a student-led community service day that is a 100-year tradition at Centenary. She is also the Assistant Student Director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
“The most outstanding service I’ve taken part in thus far in my lifetime would have to be volunteering at The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Shreveport,’’ she wrote.
Na’Lani has always been a service leader. She credits parents Leonard and Yvonne Zeno with instilling in her the drive to serve from an early age. By the 4th grade, she was president of her school 4-H Club despite not growing up on a farm. She has no plans to stop now.
She ended her essay with a little-known quote from Rev. King: “Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
