About the AndroGel® Lawsuit
A new study published on January 29, 2014 has found that prescription testosterone, (Androgel, Androderm, Android 10, Axiron, Depo-Testosterone, Bio-T-Gel, Delatestryl, Fortesta, Striant, Testim, Testopel) may raise the risk of heart attacks in older and middle-aged men with a history of heart disease.
The findings published in the Public Library of Science Journal, PLoS One, were funded by the Intramural Research Program of the National Cancer Institute. The study tracked about 56,000 older and middle-aged men that were prescribed testosterone between 2008 and 2010. The study found that men 65 and older had almost double the rate of heart attacks in the three months after they started the drug. The rate of heart attack after starting the drug also rose for those men younger than 65 who had a previous diagnosis of heart disease. Because testosterone increases the production of red blood cells, the cells can clump together, or coagulate, and make blood “thicker.”

More About AndroGel®
It is believed that the blood vessels of older men may be thinner, so the clumping increases the risk of heart attack and strokes. Testosterone therapy is approved for use in men in hypogonadism, a condition that may result in a severe testosterone deficiency. However, in order to make that diagnosis, there is a required blood test. Nevertheless, the study found that nearly a quarter of the men who were prescribed the drug never had their blood tested. The testosterone therapy was also used to combat decreased strength, fatigue and sexual dysfunction in men. The most common testosterone therapies used include Androgel, Androdem, Axiron, Depo-Testosterone, Fortesta, Striant, Testin and Android 10.
