As of August 1, 2012, Louisiana local and state police are now allowed to tow and impound vehicles of drivers who cannot provide proof of insurance on their first offense.

House Bill 1053, which was signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal on June 5, 2012, repealed the prior ban that had been in place for the last five years that prohibited law enforcement officers from towing a first-time offender’s vehicle and impounding it unless the driver or the vehicle presented an imminent danger to the public.

The prior law was criticized for being “unworkable,” because there was apparently no way for an officer to tell how many times an offender had been cited in the past for driving without auto insurance. The new law aims to decrease the number of uninsured drivers in Louisiana, which is estimated at approximately 869,000 of the 3.3 million vehicles registered in the State of Louisiana.

Louisiana Law for Minimum Auto Liability Coverage

Under Louisiana law, all drivers must carry a minimum level of liability coverage, to protect those injured in a car accident.  Louisiana’s state minimums for liability coverage include Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $15,000 per injured person and $30,000 per accident.  Do not run the risk of losing your car and incurring costly impound fees and a hefty fine.  Also, you should not endanger the health and well-being of your fellow motorists in the event you do cause a car accident injury while driving without insurance coverage.

If you have not already done so, get coverage today.  Otherwise, the cost of a traffic ticket will be the least of your worries if you get caught driving without insurance.  Happy (insured) motoring!
